Game On!!!

Greetings Vancouver-Kingsway Constituents, Contestants and interested parties.

Welcome to the Election 2008 Vancouver-Kingsway Blog. This is a short race, voters go to the polls on October 14th 2008 and this constituency is one of the most important contests in Canada. Why is this the case, you may ask?

Well, many of us know that our riding faired very poorly in the 2006 federal election, with David Emerson sailing into office, elected a Liberal on the backs of his supporters and a majority of voters in Vancouver-Kingsway. And just moments later, he crossed the floor to join the Conservative Party of Canada, disgracing himself, betraying and dishonoring the constituents who elected him, and indeed, the entire riding and the electoral process. Read more about here: De-elect David Emerson

Here’s a little quote directly from David Emerson which should give voters some food for thought:

"The overlap between the Liberals and Conservatives leaves a little ground where people can be comfortable in either one."

This is a very diverse and challenging constituency to represent. According to the 2006 Census, Vancouver-Kingsway is one of the most ethno-culturally diverse ridings around. Our next elected representative must be a strong and ethical leader who is aware of and will fairly and adequately represent the interests of the wide range of stakeholders who call Vancouver-Kingsway home and have their businesses here.

In addition to representing our interests, needs and issues, our next elected Member of Parliament will need to be a strong leader and voice for all of British Columbia. It isn't our "imagination," or "Western alienation" for too long, the House of Parliament, the "People's House" has been dominated by the issues, wants and concerns of Eastern Canada, specifically Ontario and Quebec, who have the largest populations.

A simple example of BC's status as "poor country cousin mouse" is that BC celebrated it's 150th anniversary this year. Quebec celebrated it's 400th anniversary, certainly an amazing and historic event. The Conservative federal government gave Quebec $110 million for their celebration. Guess how much they gave BC for our celebration? If you guess nothing you're right. At least that was the initial contribution. Once the Conservatives were informed they were heading to the polls, they managed to find a pittance to throw BC's way.
